Algeria sentences 12 to death

An Algerian court sentenced 12 people to death on Sunday on charges of forming an armed Islamist terrorist group, murder, kidnapping and planning explosive attacks, a judicial source said.

Another suspect, Arec Rabah, was also sentenced in absentia like the others, to 20 years imprisonment in a separate investigation into links to an "armed terrorist group".

On Saturday, the same Boumerdes court condemned another 24 people for similar offences - bringing to 175 the number of death sentences pronounced on Islamist extremists on the run.

The death penalty had not been carried out in Algeria since 1993.
